Story of Parade

                           The Story of the Parade

In 1964, thousands gathered together to walk down Riverside Drive in a show of support for the young State of Israel.  Since then, the Salute to Israel Parade has continued its tradition as the world's largest gathering in support and celebration of Israel and its people.  A major vehicle for Zionist expression, the Parade enables our communities to come together in a non-partisan, apolitical show of unity and solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Israel. The Parade is a vehicle for all friends of Israel to express their pride and connection to the Israeli spirit.

Salute to Israel Parade 2010

In 2010, the Parade will feature tens of thousands of costumed marchers representing public and private schools as well as Jewish and non-Jewish corporations, organizations and institutions.  An expected one million enthusiastic spectators will gather to watch American and Israeli community leaders and dignitaries, celebrities, floats and marching bands proceed up Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.  This exciting event attracts world-wide press and media coverage.  The 2010 Salute to Israel Parade will feature many exciting attractions, including:

  • Shofar blowers opening the Parade
  • Celebrities, dignitaries, and politicians
  • Beautifully decorated floats
  • Lively marching bands
  • Street performers, clowns and jugglers
  • Scores of motorcycle riders bearing Israeli flags
  • Israeli flags and decorative banners blanketing Fifth Avenue

The Creative Theme

The Parade is a year-long educational effort geared towards its participating marching groups. Each year, a Creative Theme is selected, developed into a series of Israel-related topics, and introduced to participants through the guidance of the Parade's educational staff. This year, the Parade will celebrate the many and varied aspects of Israel's Ongoing Heritage through the creative theme:

Lights… Camera… Action… ISRAEL!

With the guidance of the Parade staff, each participating marching group selects a sub-theme and develops it into a creative presentation to bring to Fifth Avenue on Parade Day.  With colorful banners, costumes and props, marchers come together on Parade Day in a spectacular show of unity and pageantry.
